About: motion, culture
This Movie is one promising piece of Documentary. Guiding a group of people from all over the UK since the age of 7 by interviewing them every seven years - this project is now in its 42nd year and it's participants 49 years old.
49up tracks back and documents their lives so far within interviews. Great Project!
Cheese?!
I hate blue cheese, except Gorgonzola! Maybe some so called Bergkäse (Swiss) or some very simple Gouda (Netherlands) for some very stable everyday use? I should stop to think about my present project - typography.
We had a short conversation about this on sunday. The whole idea kind of started to grow in my sick little imagination. It would be madly interesting to see a similar film from people who've experienced the turning points of history, war, the a:bomb and so on. Sociologists would be drooling on their desks if something like that would be made.
Have you seen the Trailer? Right, you've seen it :)
Its so simple and the only reason no one ever did it before is the lack of endurance and probably a huge risk for the production companies. But probably the BBC produced it?
Herlinde Koelbl did a Photoseries called "Spuren der Macht" guiding german politicians during their time 'in power' - and I think there was a small german production similarly concepted to the 49UP.
But still - it pretty much appears to be the perfect use of Documentary.
Too late??? You never know what history will bring, so if you would start a project like that again, it wouldnt be less exciting and interesting. Maybe the EU will fall apart, maybe there will be an atomic war, maybe shoes will be invented which last your lifetime, quantumComputer, Biotechniques, new Statesystems...
The possebilities to make a movie like that are unbelievable easy to get. VideoCameras and Computers to cut the films are cheap. But higher quality films would of course increase the attention. Anyway, if you would start a project like that next year in Gemany, I would join it!
